How do you start a conversation with a guy that you barley know (not even his name) without seeming desperate or making it awkward?

How do you know this person? Work, school, mutual friends, someone you see regularly in the same place you frequent? Regardless, a simple, confident "hi, my name is ...." If he doesn't introduce himself, ask him his name. You already have something in common (how you know this person), start off with that. The key thing is to be confident about yourself and what your doing. Be yourself. And be sincere. All these things can be easily picked up, whether you realize it or not. There's a lot of men out there that like confident women, who aren't fake. I can't guarantee that what you want will happen, but you have at least broken the ice, and can generally gauge if he's interested or not. Go with the flow, and don't feel awkward in moments of silence. Use these moments to your advantage, get creative. Good luck.

It depends on the context but generally try to ask a question related to an experience you are sharing (waiting in line, good weather, etc.) ...after a bit of small talk back and forth, asking someones name or where they are from (in which ever order) shouldnt be so awkward.
