Can you be 'just friends' after a breakup?

What's the deal with people staying "just friends" after they break up. In some rare cases, it might actually work with people staying close friends after ending a relationship, but let's get real - is this supposed to be the norm? I wonder sometimes if it's for anything more than status to be able to say "me and my ex are great friends." Is there anyone out there who is genuinely "good friends" with their ex - by choice?
