European soccer fans attack players, District Attorney Mike Nifong moves forward with Duke rape case, and more. Stephen Brandt writes.
Brett, we don’t care, make the decision and don’t tell the media that you haven’t. I’m almost at the point where I hope he comes back and breaks his leg. Soccer Fans go too Far Having been a part of a soccer riot in Europe I can tell you first hand that soccer fans are the most passionate fans out there. However, some of these fans borderline on crazy. AC Milan's Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko has urged Italian football to get a sense of perspective following the attack by fans on two Inter Milan players. This steams from the assault on Javier and Cristiano Zanetti. It has prompted a number of figures in the sport to call for a change in the culture of the game and Inter Coach Roberto Mancini said he would rather work abroad in the future. "We have to look to the future, if it carries on like this then we will end up like the gladiators of ancient Rome – if you lose you get torn to pieces," Shevchenko said in an interview with the daily Gazzetta dello Sport. "The fans have the right to protest but it is out of order to attack people. Whoever plays this game gives all they can and tries to win, I am convinced of that. I don't know of any footballers who play for any other reason," added the Milan striker referring to claims from some Inter fans that their players have not been trying. Still doesn’t excuse attacking players. "I don't understand it – if you win then you are a superstar and if you lose you are a cretin – it happens at Inter, to us, at Juventus and others. It's not like that in Ukraine or in other countries I know that. There needs to be a sense of balance from everyone," said Shevchenko who will line up against Inter in Friday's Milan derby. DA Moves Forward without DNA I don’t like to have too many negative stories about sports in my column because most of the time it is great and it can be very positive. However, stories like this don’t show it. Standing before a mostly black audience, the district attorney in charge of the Duke University rape investigation said Tuesday he does not need DNA to bring charges and vowed, "This case is not going away." Ah, so it’s a witch hunt. District Attorney Mike Nifong spoke one day after defense attorneys said DNA testing failed to connect any of Duke's lacrosse players to the alleged attack on a black stripper who said she was raped at a party by members of the nearly all-white 47-man team. There is no evidence of the rape, but hey, according to the DA you can still charge. I would need to see this on an episode of Law and Order to figure it out. Nifong stopped short of confirming the defense assessment of the DNA results, but said the case would not be hampered by a lack of DNA evidence. "It doesn't mean nothing happened," Nifong said at a public forum at North Carolina Central University, where the 27-year-old alleged victim is a student. "It just means nothing was left behind." No charges have been filed. But no, someone’s out to get Duke.

I’m beginning to hate one future NFL hall of famer – Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. He needs to make a decision on his future as to whether he’ll continue playing or retire. But no, apparently we all care that he’s still not made up his mind and he’s holding the Packer’s hostages making them over spend on worthless overrated free agents to get him to come back.
