Well, the kafuffle over Dan Brown having plagiarized material from author Michael Baigent’s book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail is all but over. Baigent and co-author Richard Leigh brought a lawsuit against the publishers of The Da Vinci Code, stating that Brown had “borrowed heavily” without crediting them. However, during the cross-examination by publisher Random House’s lawyer, Baigent admitted his claims were based on book reviews of The Da Vinci Code that he apparently “didn’t read as well as he should have”… because they don’t support his arguments. The lawsuit threatened to halt the release of the upcoming movie which is based on the best-selling book. Dan Brown will testify this week, although it doesn’t seem likely that the verdict will go against him. This is the second lawsuit surrounding The Da Vinci Code; the first was last year, when Brown was found not guilty of copyright infringement with respect to two Lewis Perdue novels about the same subject. Fantasy-lovers will be thrilled that Neil Gaiman’s book Stardust is set to begin filming. This is the second book of Gaiman’s being turned into a film this year – MirrorMask came out in limited release last summer. Gaiman is best known for co-writing Good Omens with the world’s best fantasy writer Terry Pratchett, as well as the phenomenally successful (and dark) Sandman graphic novels. Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer have signed on to star in Stardust – a strange choice for what could be a seen as a “comeback movie” for both of them. |
