The benefits of water are many, each one better than the last. Justine Kim tells you what water will do for you.Drinking eight glasses of water a day can help you fight the battle of the bulge. Justine Kim explores the weight loss benefits of water.

Forget about expensive pills and fad diets, the secret to effective weight loss lies in a chemical compound called H2O – also know as water. If you are eating right and exercising regularly, but still cannot get rid of that extra little paunch, you’re probably just not drinking enough water. This is actually quite normal as most people don’t drink their daily-recommended intake of water.

Water and your Metabolism

Metabolism is the body’s process of breaking food down and turning it into energy. Basically, your metabolism consumes calories. Since metabolism is your best ally in the battle against the bulge, you want it to be working at full speed. Water is the fuel that drives your metabolism’s chemical responses. So, if you are not drinking enough H2O, you won’t burn as many calories as you can.

Without water, your kidneys can’t do their job properly and your liver must pick up the slack. While it is helping the kidneys, the liver’s productivity will slow. It can’t metabolize fat as quickly or efficiently as it would if the kidneys were pulling their own weight. Therefore some of the fat that would normally be used as fuel gets stored in your body instead.

How much Water Should I Have?

Most nutritionists and dieticians agree that you should drink at least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water each day, which amounts to two quarts of water. If you are overweight, drink an additional glass for every 25 pounds of excess weight.

It sounds like a lot, but it will be easy to reach your fluid intake if you spread consumption out throughout the day. It is not healthy to drink too much water all at one time. Pick three or 4 times a day when you can have a big glass of water, like when you wake up, when you have your meals and during your workout. Then, sip small amounts of water in between the big servings. Don’t drink only when you feel dehydrated. Instead, drink when thirst hasn't even hit you.

You know you are drinking enough water when your urine is clear and odorless. Eventually your body will adjust to more water, so you won’t constantly be running to the washroom.
