The People’s Choice Awards and more[Entertainment Week]

Brad and Angelina will have a non-binding wedding, Britney's hubby is releasing a single, it's a contravertial week for movies, and more. Kerry Rickard writes. Well, the People’s Choice Awards has run its fairly predictable course – hey, if we didn’t like the winners, it wouldn’t be the People’s Choice Awards, would it? There weren’t too many new faces this year and it is possible that some of the winners were nominated for their cumulative effort or presence in pop culture, as opposed to their actual current ‘watchability’ value. Not that that’s a bad thing. The reality show trend is obviously dying – American Idol won Best Competitive Reality Show, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition took the Best Non-Competitive Reality Show, definitively establishing that dirty, smelly men are totally passé and suave, elegant gay men are where it’s at. One of this year’s (arguably) biggest closing series, Everybody Loves Raymond snagged Best Comedy, with Ray Romano himself winning Best Male TV Star. William Petersen proved once more that eccentric but sexy old men reel them in: serious props to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for winning Best TV Drama. Again. Heck, he could put me under the microscope any day. Jessica Simpson also received a mention at the Awards and not just because media coverage of her impending divorce has been far more interesting than several years of Newlyweds. Her rendition of These Boots Are Made For Walkin' from the Dukes of Hazzard soundtrack won the Best Song From A Movie award. With Walk The Line as a contender, I’m going to have to put that win down to a mostly-exposed Jessica in the video – it sure as hell wasn’t Willie Nelson that did the trick. The only big shocker from the People’s Choice Awards was the winner for Best Drama – Star Wars III. We all know the main reason it won (other than no sci-fi award existing) is the scene with Annikin crawling out of the lava and Obi-wan is screaming, “You were the Chosen One! I loved you!” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The Karla Homolka Movie Perhaps the most controversial news this week, especially for Canadian audiences, is that Karla, slated to be released in theatres on January 20th, will have an 18A rating. Many lobby groups in Ontario have fought against the movie’s release and an 18A rating indicates that they had some impact in restricting the audience. The film is based on the most notorious serial rapists/killers in Canadian history, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. It deals with the murders of 2 schoolgirls, as well as that of Karla’s own sister Tammy. Much like The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story, the movie relies on one big name to make up for other deficiencies, like budget and taste; in this case, “That 70s Show” star Laura Prepon. And like The Laci Peterson Story, the killings are too recent in the public consciousness. The producers may have the lofty goal of “letting people make up their minds what happened,” but we the viewers don’t need their movie to decide. The 'home videos' Bernardo left behind told us everything we needed to know. Federline's New Single Britney Spears now has some musical competition – from her husband. Sketchy ex-dancer Kevin Federline is releasing his own single, PopoZão. The gist of the song roughly translates into “I Like Big Butts (If They’re Brazilian.)” Since he couldn't get a record deal, Federline has released the song online. He says that his wife is appearing on the album and will likely crop up in the video. But of course, he also said their marriage was perfect, they weren’t fighting and that she didn’t kick him out. So who knows what will happen. It looks like Brit should have stuck with the first husband. Oh, and by the way – I hope you now realize that having a baby is a bad way to solve marriage problems, sweetheart. |
