The Wall Street Journal has finally has shed light on a mystery that haunted Washington for months: Why did the White House fire longtime head chef Walter Scheib? Blame it on the bivalve. A source in the East Wing told the Journal that Scheib displayed a certain arrogance in repeatedly serving scallops to Bush. The president hates scallops, it seems, and Scheib was shown the door in August after 11 years cooking for presidents, royalty, prime ministers, and movie stars. Scheib last week said in the New York Daily News that he never received a request to take scallops off the menu. If there had been, “I can assure you there never would have been a scallop in the building,” he told the paper. I hope the White House doesn't have to shell out for a wrongful termination on this one. But Di Peel, a mother of two, is producing what the market wants. Unlike recent winners of the prestigious Turner Prize for modern art, Peel's works can do what paintings are traditionally supposed to do – brighten up a bare wall. Her first canvas sold for $10, her second for $26 and currently she's busy with an order for 10 at a princely $89 each. Peel, from Tasmania, freely admits that her chosen method doesn't allow much detail. “They are more like abstract flowers,” she told Hobart's Mercury newspaper. “But my latest piece, people say, looks like the Earth from space. My son named it 'earthquake' because he thinks it looks like an earthquake.” Peel, who is happy to describe herself as a big woman, works at the kitchen table rather than at an easel. ”I either apply the paint to my breasts and lean on to the canvas or apply the paint to the canvas and then lean into it to spread the paint,” she explained. Though new to the art world, the Australian is wary of those who would counterfeit her work. “I sign every picture with my nipple.” |
