4 Elements of the Perfect T-shirt

Style

The style of your t-shirt is also worth considering.  From baseball tees to ringers and golf shirts, the style of your t-shirt can say a lot about you.  A vintage t-shirt says indie rocker while a soft green or pink golf shirt says new prep.  Ringers give a hip framed look while baseball tees give off a skateboarder vibe.

Try to avoid v-neck t-shirts.  These collars typically work better for long sleeve shirts and formal attire.

Colour

A great size and hip style are a start, but what about colours?  Muted tones and darker colours tend to be more masculine, but don’t avoid brighter colours.  They can make a t-shirt truly special.  Choose a colour that aligns itself with how you view yourself.  Try checking out the t-shirts worn by your favourite musicians and actors.  You can often get good ideas from them without having to shell out for the personal stylists.

Logos and Prints

Believe it or not, logos and prints can easily make or break a t-shirt.  Try to avoid t-shirts with blatant vulgarity, stupid sayings and sexual innuendo.  These scream a combined mixture of 'low class' and 'angst-ridden hormonal teenager', even if you’re 30 years old.

A t-shirt that makes penis size references is about as classy as a girl’s t-shirt that has the words 'slut' written with glitter and rhinestones.  The only exception to this rule is if you are going for the Dukes of Hazzard trucker look.  With graphics and logos, subtlety is usually the way to go.

At all costs avoid polyester t-shirts that feature full front and back prints.  These shirts say, “I’m a dork that lives in my mother’s basement.  I play Dungeons and Dragons all day and I choose the clothes with most the graphics because they make me gain a plus three in hit points.”  More does not equal better.  These are about as cool as beer t-shirts.  Yes, the people in beer commercials make those t-shirts look cool, but they are not.  It’s a commercial.  It’s fake.  As with most things in life, style and quality comes attached to cost.

Political t-shirts and rock t-shirts are always classics, but try to find original prints.  These prints are usually mass-produced and you really want to find a t-shirt that is as original as you.  The flip side to these t-shirts, particularly the concert ones, is that they usually come attached with a story.  These make for great conversation pieces at gatherings.

a t-shirt can make the man

If you are looking for that perfect t-shirt, try going to independent stores and vintage clothing shops.  The trends to check out right now are t-shirts with prints over the shoulders, prints on the base of neck and t-shirts that feature 80s and 90s pop culture references.  In the end, the most important factor for finding a t-shirt is one that makes you more confident and plays off your own strengths.
