Failing This Fall: 3 Trends to Avoid

Corsets
Before I start, I understand that corsets are great for making women’s waists look defined and creating that perfect hourglass shape. I get it. However, if you’ve ever put one on, you know that they are not exactly the most comfortable items of clothing. No one wants to wear a corset. So, the fact that they have resurfaced and are now a huge trend is nothing more than an annoyance.

Furthermore, the fact that corsets accentuate a woman’s bust is fascinating since the world of high fashion is the farthest thing from interested in putting an emphasis on breast size. In fact, that is one area of a woman’s body that is often downplayed on the runway. While this trend demonstrates the fashion world’s shift toward lady-like and traditional looks, this recycled trend surely cannot last.

Full Skirts
By now, those of you who are devout fashion week followers may have noticed that the trends in the article were all featured in Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2011 show. While I’ve never been a fan of LV, this season’s collection disappointed me like no other show has before. A huge part of that disappointment stemmed from the fact that the models were sent down the runway wearing long, full 50s style skirts. Rather than looking interesting and new, the outfits appeared dated and boring.

For those of us with a smaller build, these skirts are simply a nightmare. Unless you are 5 foot 10 inches or taller, I don’t suggest trying to pull this one off; especially not if you’re pairing your Olivia Newton-John skirt with kitten heels. Just don’t do it. Ever.

Now with all of that being said, if you love any or all of these trends, then stock up! The bashing that took place above was simply my opinion. And since I’m not Anna Wintour or Carine Roitfeld, what I think about trends doesn’t really matter. The most important accessory you can wear – that never goes out of style – is confidence. (Yes, I’m aware of how lame and cliché that sentence is, but it’s true).

There are also ways of incorporating trends into your wardrobe in a subtle way, instead of taking it literally. For instance, rather than wearing a full, calf-length skirt, try a full miniskirt with a cute pair of heels (kitten if you absolutely must). Mix and match trends to create a look that is uniquely you. In the meantime, I’m going to stick to my skin-tight jeans, boyfriend blazers and studded sky-high stilettos. But that’s just me.
