How to Change Your Habits

Back To Youth

One thing I notice more and more everyday is how bloody lazy and serious we are as human beings. It bugs the hell out of me every time I see somebody who is overweight driving around in one of those motorized carts. It bugs me even more when I see those same people in the grocery store filing their little cart on the front of their little vehicle with chips and pop.

Why are we so lazy? Is it maybe because we are so serious and fun and games are just that…too fun for us? I know why a lot of people don’t workout.

Because it’s *put explicit word here* boring for the most part.

Who really likes going to a gym and lifting dumbbells. Honestly, I like working out…but I don’t love it. I’ll get on streaks where it’s awesome and I’m really feeling it, but a lot of the time I just do it because I know it’s good for me. It gets boring to me too.

So why not go back to your youth? The problem with the fitness industry is that we pretty much tell everybody to be health and fit you need to looked ripped and lift weights all the time and have the crazy perfect diet so you can get six pack abs.

Listen, I’m all for being ripped and having a six pack but a lot of people out there just don’t or can’t. It’s a great concept but how many people are actually willing to do that type of work to get those results. From what I’ve seen, very little.

I think resistance training (remember your body is considered a resistance tool – ie. pushups) is extremely important and you should make it part of your week at least 2 days, preferably 3 but other then that get out and have some fun. Kick a soccer ball around for an hour, go walk to the bank instead of drive to it, take that bikes out, hit the hiking trails instead of going to an afternoon matinee, or play tag with your kids.

Hell, instead of going for coffee to gossip with your friends why don’t you all just go for a walk or kick a ball to each other and talk about ideas on how to make your life better instead of talking about how your friend (who isn’t there) is being a drama queen again.

Bottom line, start being a lot healthier and a lot more active.

By The Book Junk

This was a pretty interesting topic that came up this week. I started joking around a bit with a fellow trainer about how I just forgot to read the section of fat loss training in my certification manual. That’s why I do things so different then everybody else.

I remember once talking a course and having to put down the wrong answer because I knew what the ‘by the book’ answer was, but I also knew that it wasn’t the right solution. Our industry is still stuck in the 60’s research, trust me.

I recently had a new client come in half hour before her first session with me and say she was there to do her cardio before her session with me. I said why the hell would you do that? Because that’s what her old trainer told her to do. Then I asked her what else she did and the story of light weight and high reps came into my current reality nightmares. The dumb part is though is that people think this is the right way to do it and think they are getting good workouts.

Needless to say, thirty minutes later she found out why intensity over duration was a more real world and effective concept. Oh ya, and just so I don’t forget…lift some weight.

My fitness training shouldn’t be looked at as unique. Use the foam roller and lacrosse ball, do activation techniques before you train, then workout hard and fast, then stretch…then go home and don’t come back for a day or two.
