Celebrity Clothing Lines

Celebrity clothing lines are everywhere and show no sign of slowing down. Souzan Michael looks at which ones are worth the buzz and which fail to impress.

Celebrities seem to do it all these days. Being a triple-threat is no longer sufficient; most A-list celebs have several different projects going on at once, from acting to singing to releasing fragrances and clothing lines. But just because they can attach their names to a clothing line doesn’t always mean they should.

I’m not sure who told celebrities that calling themselves “designers” was okay. Aside from a select few truly talented actors and singers who have successfully branched into the world of fashion, most of these celebs don’t sketch, sew or have any creative abilities when it comes to clothing. In fact, the majority of them don’t even dress themselves and instead rely on the help of a stylist (Kardashian sisters, I’m talking to you).
Instead of going through the list of celebrities that clearly have no place in the world of fashion and design (Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, Jersey Shore castmates, among many many others), let’s take a look at the ones that work and keep us coming back for more.

Although I’m tempted to turn this entire article into an obsessive declaration of my love and admiration of the Olsen twins, I’ll try to control myself. The twins’ have had a hugely popular clothing line at Walmart for as long as I can remember, but their transition into high fashion has been smooth and seemingly effortless. In 2006 they were named the faces of Badgley Mischka and later launched two clothing lines: luxury brand The Row and a more affordable line, Elizabeth and James. Both lines are hugely successful among critics, fans and fellow celebrities. In 2009, Mary-Kate and Ashley were inducted into the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) along with celebrated designers Alexander Wang and Jason Wu, solidifying their status as respectable and talented designers.
