Sizzling Summer Make-up Looks

Vintage Rage
Everyone knows that fashion relies on the reinterpretation of past trends. The world of make-up is certainly no different. This season there are several looks that are making a comeback, each from its respective decade, and it is up to us lucky ladies to choose. For an easy vintage look, sweep a very dark coloured shadow over the tops of your lids and follow through with a thick, black liner.  Apply a deep crimson shade to your lips.  Or, you can adopt a look from a distinct time period by doing a quick search of the decade’s top iconic figures.

The 60’s, for example, are characterized by very heavy, lower lashes highlighted with a light, pastel shadow extended from the inner corner of the eye, along the lower eyelid.  This creates an ultra-feminine look that can be contrasted with short or slicked back hair.

The 70’s are characterized by emotion and experimentation, which translates into the make-up world as splashes of bright colour.  To achieve this glamorous look, choose from a palette of greens, blues, yellows and purples and apply these shadows to your eyes.  You can stick to one colour or merge two; green and blue or yellow, for example, work well together.  Ensure that when applying, you blend the shades well to avoid lines that are too defined.  Because the eyes are so prominent, lips should be left bare or simply coated with a muted, natural gloss.

Finally, we reach the decade that has been, until recently, avoided at all costs.  The 80’s take the colours of the 70’s to the next level.  When used in moderation, these neon yellows, pinks and purples can be flattering, especially on a night out.  For this look, the shadows are extended up until the brow line, which can be overwhelming on some faces.  For bolder looks such as this, always factor in some time before you go out to make adjustments or start over.

Know your Features
Remember that not every one of these looks will look fabulous on everyone.  As you continue to experiment with a variety of looks, you will learn to recognize what looks best on your own facial characteristics and what doesn’t.  The effects of the products that you use vary according to your skin tone and type, the placement of your eyes and brows, the size of your lips and even the colour of your eyes and hair.  There is no easy way to figure out how to apply make-up without a little trial and error.  Thankfully make-up, unlike dye or a tattoo, comes off easily with wash and water.  So be a little courageous in front of the mirror, repeat the looks you like and do away with those you don’t.
