The Right Approach to Fitness

Dan Grant reviews how your fitness plan should fit with your overall life goals.

It’s been a long time since fitness has been a main priority in my articles so I thought I’d mix one in for you. Why hasn’t fitness been a priority lately? Because it’s not the most important part of you reaching your best life. It’s a HUGE part, don’t get me wrong, but all the mindset and life stuff I’ve been talking about the last almost year is by far the most important information you will ever read.

I think it will be a nice break for you and maybe for me to just get back to talking fitness and health today, though, so let’s do that.

Evolution

My opinions on a lot of exercise related things have not changed…but some has.

For example, a couple days ago I ran my first ever 10K race (without training for it specifically) and I ran a 57:50. Pretty good for a guy who never runs over a mile. I know there is a passion out there for running with a lot of people and I respect that if that’s what you’re all about. If you love the empowerment of finishing a 10K or a marathon then I congratulate you. There was a definite sense of achievement feeling when I crossed that finish line while hundreds of people cheered me on.

But, if you’re running all these crazy long distances for fat loss purposes then you’ve been severely misguided. Did you know that if you take the body fat percentage of a long distance athlete from the start of their training to race day their body fat percentage is actually HIGHER on race day when they are ‘technically’ supposed to be in their peak condition.

Long distance anything leads to higher body fat percentage over time, period. That’s not what you want. I have some long distance runners in my 20 minute bootcamps and their level of conditioning and performance in their races have actually improved.  Remember your body doesn’t like to be pointlessly beaten into submission by you. It will get back at you, trust me.
