Plastic Surgery for Men

Women aren’t the only ones seeking out cosmetic surgery.  Reine Gammo looks at typical plastic surgery procedures to see why men are choosing to go under the knife.

It is a major misconception to think that men are not held up to a beauty standard as much as women are. Men are subjected to ads featuring athletes with chiselled abs, a healthy head of hair, and perfectly balanced features. The difference between men and women is that women seem to be more affected by the scrutiny, in that they are more willing to do something to live up to that standard. But this is no longer the case, with more and more men filling up cosmetic surgeons’ offices as much as women do.
With appearance affecting our job qualifications as much as it does our probabilities of finding a mate, it is no wonder both sexes are looking to the cosmetic industry for a little help. Here are a few procedures that are popular among the male gender.

Nose Jobs (Rhinoplasty)
The goal of rhinoplasty is to create an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking and proportionate nose. Most nasal surgeries are done through an internal approach which involves small incisions inside the nose with no visible scars on the skin. Rhinoplasty can remove the bump on the bridge, narrow the nose, make the top of the nose smaller, refine the tip of the nose, or adjust the tip projection resulting in a more pleasing look.

While some noses with bumps on the bridge are actually suiting to particular faces, some may choose to be rid of it, and this is where rhinoplasty comes in. Carefully consider this procedure, and do not take it lightly because the effects are not reversible and there is considerable swelling and aftercare to deal with. Rhinoplasty usually costs $3000 and is among the most popular of cosmetic procedures for men and women. Recovery time is about 1 week for 60% of the final results, 2 to 3 weeks for 80%, while 100% final results will show in about a year after the procedure.

Pinned Ears (Otoplasty)
Many children are born with ears that protrude too far from the head. This causes the “Dumbo ears” appearance and is often embarrassing. The problem is corrected by a combination of stitching and reshaping of the ear cartilage, to bring it closer to the head. The cut or incision is made behind the ear so that after healing, the incision is not visible. Ear cartilage will be reshaped to give it the normal curves and contour that is often missing. This is a relatively straightforward procedure, costs about $2000 to $4000, and recovery time is between 1 to 3 weeks.
