![]() Dad doesn’t have to look boxy or puffy anymore. He needn’t don jeans with pleats or rips (and we don’t mean those cool-looking deconstructed on purpose rips.) If you think your dad/husband is stuck in a dad-jeans rut, tell him gently there is hope for redemption! Jean shopping can be a daunting task. But with the right fashion-know-how, it can really be a cinch! Denim is that fabric we love to love; wearable, washable, durable, and breathable. There are literally hundreds of types of jeans, diversifying in cut, colour, finish, wash, price, and brand. Many retailers, including Sears and the Bay, sell quality men’s jeans at lower price points, under brand names. They may not be the $20 jeans you remember from your youth, but that’s because the quality has become exponentially better. They will last him longer, so make the investment for dad. Expect to spend $100 and up. Check Points 1. Choose quality fabric. Nowadays, there are many different weights, colours and cuts of jeans. It doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. You can find pairs that have a touch of Lycra – that stretchy, hug your legs element that makes it easier to wear. The trick is not to over do it with something too body-hugging. It’s all about a need for comfort and movement. 2. Ask for help. Sales clerks at your local mall are knowledgeable about the items in store. A rack and stack of jeans on the wall would send any man running, if he doesn’t have any clue where to start. Sales reps are fashion savvy and happy to help wayward shoppers. They will be patient with you, and work with your needs. They can tell what looks good and what doesn’t, and are generally honest with you. They want to have happy customers leave their stores. Some big chain stores (Mark’s Work Wearhouse) may only carry three fits of jean, while a premium brand will offer dozens of types. 3. Know where to look. The wonder this about the internet is, before setting out on foot into the denim jungle, you can do a bit of research – that is – online browsing. Most major retailers have a website that lets you browse specific items, compare prices, in a current and up-to-date database. Expert Opinions A few basic strategies for de-daddifying you dad’s jeans are, as follows: 2. Leave the flair behind. In fact, leave behind any hint of reminiscent seventies bell-bottom. Always find jeans with a straight leg. Classic and clean, when worn with a nice pair of shoes, straight jeans look instantly pulled together. 3. Low-rise are really just for kids. These are almost unflattering for anyone who wears them. Never, under any circumstances, slip on a pair of low-rise jeans. If you don’t know what low-rise is, that’s good. There is no need to. If you’re over 30, and in doubt, remember this mantra “low-rise, no rise.” Repeat. Your jeans belong on your waist. Remember to take dad/hubby with you for the shopping excursion. He will need to try them on. Not the most fun Saturday he’s ever had, but a necessary one! He will thank you later. |
