Want to eat your favorite snacks without sabotaging your diet? Stephanie Patulli can show you how.

Delicious snacks seem to show up whenever you’re trying to eat healthy or follow a diet. They appear at office parties, family gatherings, and in vending machines everywhere. It’s hard to avoid eating fatty foods, and even if you do, you’re left craving them until you finally give in to temptation.

You don’t always have to eat the high-calorie version of your favorite snack. Get a little creative, and you can eat what you want without ruining your entire diet.

Order Small

As you’ve probably heard before, eating smaller portions is one of the best ways to slim down. Large coffees and big cookies may be appetizing when you’ve got a big appetite, but these snacks pack tons of calories, most of which are because of their size. If you order the smallest size or choose the smallest portion, you can eat the foods you crave and reduce the amount of fat consumed.

Sneak in the Good Stuff

Get creative with how and where you mix your high calorie cravings into your diet. Below are a couple of great tips.

Ice cream is a wonderful treat, especially as the weather warms up. As the name suggests though, it is iced cream, so it can definitely be fattening. Eat frozen yogurt instead. The texture is a little lighter than ice cream, but it’s actually a pleasant difference. Frozen yogurt is much lower in fat than ice cream. It’s easy to find in a variety of flavours at any local grocery store.

Are you a chocoholic? Buy some chocolate-flavoured sprinkles and put them over top of your frozen yogurt or even on your oatmeal. It may sound weird, but the sprinkles add that chocolaty taste without carrying the calories. If you want the real thing, pick a dark chocolate bar with the highest content of cocoa available.

Dark chocolate has been found to be rich in antioxidants and to be good for your health. Eat the bars whole or melt them in a water bath on the stovetop and pour it over fruit. To make a water bath, fill a pot with water (not too much or it will boil over) and put a smaller bowl in the water. Put the chocolate in the bowl and turn your stove on low heat. Keep stirring the chocolate until it gets to your desired consistency, then turn the heat off and enjoy!
