Health Care Myths Revealed

How can you distinguish between actual care tips and ones that are pure fiction? Reine Gammo shares a few myths and why they are incorrect.

A lot of the time when we need advice on certain beauty and care problems, we go to our mothers or friends and seek their input. Most of the time, the things they have to say have been passed down from other people or from their own mothers and friends. This is troubling only because it starts the spread of bad advice—a cycle that continues until we have incorrect and even sometimes dangerous advice being passed down to more and more people. The trouble with advice like this is that it stands the test of time and just keeps circulating, and it doesn’t account for the changes in time and our current lifestyles. Here are a few beauty myths that sound like they are completely authentic, but their benefits are completely false.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day
The reason this was said to so many of us is because it was thought to dry out your hair and make you lose some of it as well. The truth is, if you only wash your hair once it’s gotten oily, you’ll be stripping your scalp of all the oil it has been secreting to nourish your hair, and you’ll make it even drier. It is a common misconception that oily hair is caused by an oily scalp. The truth is if you want healthy hair, you have to take care of your scalp, which means nourishing it as much as possible. A dry scalp causes oil glands to produce more oil, and once on the scalp, oil transfers to the hair itself. What you are actually doing when you wait to wash your hair is drying your scalp further; the oilier it gets, the drier it is. Just as you take care of the skin all over your body, your scalp needs the same treatment. While your diet has little effect on your hair, it has an effect on your skin, so drink lots of water to hydrate your skin. Also, use shampoo that focuses on your scalp. Hair masques are good too, especially ones that contain natural ingredients, like avocado. You can wash your hair every single day of every single year and it can look as healthy as can be if you take care of it properly.

Toothpaste is a Great Spot Treatment
False, false and false.  Although, it is easy to see why this one came about; toothpaste contains benzoyl peroxide, which is used as a whitening agent in toothpaste and as an acne-zapping ingredient in some acne treatment products. However, there are much more effective products that can specifically target the problem acne, and have a higher concentration of the ingredient. Look for products that have at least 5% of benzoyl peroxide if you are having acne problem. Toothpaste is for your teeth not your skin!
