Who Are Your Scorpions?

Do what is best for you.  Dan Grant explains how to avoid being stung by the scorpions in your life.

Did you ever hear the story about the frog and the scorpion?

One day by a river bank, a frog was just about to dive in and swim to the other side, but a scorpion came by and asked for a ride to the other side.

“I don’t think so,” said the frog, “Scorpions sting frogs.”

The scorpion replied, “Why would I sting you? If I did then we would both drown and I’m not about to commit suicide.”

The frog thought about it and said, “I guess you’re right, why would you do that?”

So the scorpion hopped on the back of the frog and they started swimming across the river. Low and behold, halfway through their journey, the scorpion stung the frog.

The frog was shocked, “Why did you do that, you fool? Now we will both drown and die.”

The scorpion replied, “I did it because I’m a scorpion, and scorpions sting frogs.”

Who are your Scorpions?

Who are the scorpions of your life?

For kids in high school, the scorpions could be the ones pushing the idea of drugs or drinking heavily and doing stupid stuff. It could be the guy who always insists that he’s okay to drive home after a "few" drinks.

It could be the person who tells you, "Just give me the money for this business and you’ll have it all back in no time…trust me."

It could even be your family, as hard as that is to accept sometimes. Does your family ignore the moments you cherish and focus on the activities they think you should be doing?

What to do, What to do?

What are you supposed to do about the scorpions in your life? Just get rid of them? Maybe, but maybe not.

Scorpions in my life tell me that money is bad and I shouldn’t want to make a lot of it. Some are friends and some are family of the closest nature. Should I never speak to them again, just because they don't agree with me?

No, probably not.

To handle the situation, I never talk to them about money. It’s a waste of my time.  I’m not going to change their minds.

The Moral

If you have to get rid of scorpion friends so you can move on and be the person you want to be, do it. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. If you think you can stay friends, then don’t talk about the sticky subject when you are with them.

If you know of the scorpions in your life, but refuse to change things, are you the biggest and harshest scorpion of all?
