Why You Should Wear Black And White

Proportion Play

Black and white again and again may sound monotonous, but it’s not!  As long as you can play a bit with the proportions of your pieces, you can add visual interest.  Here are three simple ways:

L&S:  long over short (long white trench over short black mini-dress)
F&F:  full over fitted (a voluminous print chiffon shirt over skinny white jeans)
F&F reverse:  fitted over full (a short, fitted black jacket over a full-skirted white dress)

Pattern Press

Just because it’s black and white, doesn't make it boring.  If you can play with proportion, you can also play with prints.  There's really no guesswork in matching anything, so mixing black and white prints with solids is a cinch.

Big And Bold

When it comes to black and white prints, the bolder, the better.  Just make sure to scale the print to your frame (smaller for smaller frames, larger for larger frames).  If there is one thing black and white does for sure, it creates contrast in a very big way.  Add a mod touch to your black and white looks with strong, geometric graphics mixing black and white or try something subtler like contrast borders or banding.

Texturize

Solid black and white can look a little bland, so spice up your look with plenty of texture.  A change in fabric can make a world of difference.  From shiny to matte, nubby to sheer, texture can come from finishes (like patent leather), fabric treatments (like pleats, ruching or ruffles) or from embellishment (like tonal beading or embroidery).

Don’t Forget The Frou-Frou

Well, it is spring after all and if you love the black and white idea, but hate to give up your colours and ruffles, you are in luck.  Black and white, mixed with a tailored jacket over a pretty, sheer print looks like spring in a most sophisticated way.  Mixing frou-frou pieces—ruffles, georgette, tiered—with tailored and fitted separates balances out the look.

What's sexier than showing off a gorgeous tan?  Highlighting it in a white bathing suit, of course.  Nothing looks more classic and chic than black and white swimwear.  Strategic bands of contrast colour are flattering and slenderizing (i.e. a black suit with a white band at the neckline).  White tops work with black bottoms in a two-piece ensemble, again accentuating the upper half and taking attention off the lower.  A one-piece black suit with white sandals is truly beach chic.

A Man's World

Take a cue from the men's tux and go with black and white combos for special occasions.  It's a timeless look that takes great to sexy fabrics like lace.  And of course, you don't have to give up all your favourite colours.  Like men change their ties, from red to green to purple, adding a splash of colour will make your chic colour palette pop.

It's Black, It's White

Dancing yet?  A popular Michael Jackson tune shares the name of this overlooked trend that will have you dancing in the streets.  Not convinced to squash your paisleys this spring?  Black and white is subtle, intriguing and sexy.  It’s classic, simple and chic.  Audrey Hepburn.  Coco Chanel.  And black headbands were made for bad hair days.
