Many readers may ask, what is street style?  How can you define it?  The answer is you can’t.  Street style is unique from city to city and from person to person.  It’s not about being on-trend or copying a page out of Vogue magazine.  It’s about personal expression.  That is its core.  Street style is about expressing your personality, your tastes and preferences, and your overall lifestyle.  It is a reflection of you while in the larger context of the city you live in.  And most of all, it is about breaking the rules and thinking outside the fashion box.  Even some Vogue editorials reflect street style elements and take inspiration from some famous street style bloggers, while some even employ them, like the ever-so-charming style blogger Garance Doré’s partnership with the world famous fashion magazine.

So What Is Street Style?

You can’t compartmentalize street style and write a formula for a winning outfit, because it can be a host of different things.  Street style in Paris may be relaxed and polished, while in New York it’s quirky and practical, and in Brazil it’s colourful and comfortable.  There is no mould, so there is none to break.  It all depends on the lifestyle that the city demands and the way it shapes your life and what you are about.  Since there is no one formula, here are some elements that identify street style and how you can come up with your own version.

Identify And Highlight

The best way to begin your street style quest is to identify your own style.  What do you like in terms of shapes, colours, fabrics, accessories, etc.?  What are you most comfortable in?  What fits you like a second skin?  What are you trying to project to the world?  Think of your personality and your lifestyle and try to adapt the clothes to them.  Are you a loud person who likes attention?  Then try going for colours and patterns, or even mismatched shapes.  Or perhaps you are low maintenance and prefer comfort above all else?  Well, comfort doesn’t mean no style.  Why not a pair of jeans, a white t-shirt, a cool black or navy blazer and some blue flat lace-up oxfords?  It’s all about the unexpected, yet you can be as comfortable as you like.  You don’t have to don 6-inch heels to command attention.
