All things pertaining to etiquette should, hopefully, inspire in each of us an aesthetic response.  For me, the act of shaving has always seemed like an art form in itself.

Like architecture, shaving can be a perpetual, timeless, unquestioned exercise – in so many words, a religious state and a means of quasi-artistic expression with the ultimate canvas – the self.  Few things reveal the essential confidence that underscores our existence quite like a perfectly proportioned building or a good, close shave.

Therefore, consider this a guide towards the discipline of grooming.  These are the seven virtues of the shave, stepping stones in achieving total satisfaction in the field of facial upkeep.

Creating a Ritual

The importance of ritual in any endeavor, especially one as potentially time-consuming and crucial as shaving, should never be underestimated.  One trick is to consider the act, not as an act, but rather as a tradition that, as a man, you are privileged to enter into each and every morning.  In doing so, be sure to allot yourself the proper time frame lest the shave be rendered a hurried job even before taking the wash cloth in hand.

Attitude is important.  You’re not doing this simply to keep your conservative-minded employer at bay.  You’re doing it because so many great men started their day in like manner before you, so who are you to question them?  Let this be your guiding light.

Having Patience

Relating to the importance of ritual and tradition is the virtue of patience, a crucial ingredient.  It might be difficult to endure when you’ve just dragged yourself out of bed at 6:30 on a Monday morning.

Remember though, that half the battle in any discipline is mental.  You’re simply not going to get close to the skin of your science if you’re not prepared to sacrifice the proper mirror time.  So train yourself in endurance and focus on the task at hand.
