What kind of decisions are the most important type you’ll make while travelling?  Jenny Ferguson helps you out with your options.
When we travel, we’re always making choices.  What should I eat for breakfast?  Where should I go today?  How many pictures should I take?  Can I spend ten more minutes in this world-class museum or do I have to get a move on now so I don’t risk missing my train?

Making choices is really tough for some people.  You know them.  You might even be one of them.  There are people in this world that couldn’t make a decision if their lives depended on it.  But even if you aren’t one of these people, most of us struggle with making choices in our lives.  While on holiday in some potentially unfamiliar space, making decisions can be tough for anyone and everyone.  So here’s a breakdown of the kinds of choices you’ll be dealing with on your next trip.  Maybe if you get to know them now, they won’t be so tough to face when you’re making decisions on the road.

Spontaneous Choices

These are mostly fun and frivolous choices, the kind that you should never worry too much about, despite the fact that spontaneous choices can make or break your trip the same as any other decision you have to make on vacation.  The thing is, if you over-think your spontaneous choices, they aren’t quite so spontaneous anymore.

Spontaneous choices cover a range of things, including where to eat dinner or which activity you want to spend your day doing.  Are you going to relax on the beach or head into the town for a stroll?  Is that restaurant you keep reading about in your Lonely Planet guidebook right for lunch or have you been swayed by the sweet smells of street vendors and their delicious carts?

While spontaneous choices can be restricted by other kinds of vacation decision-making, including safety and budget concerns, part of enjoying your vacation means embracing spontaneous choices, learning to live with the decisions that were successful and meant great times, great memories and an awesome vacation day, as well as finding something magical in the spontaneous decisions that lead you off in a completely unexpected directions.

If you’re having trouble making spontaneous decisions on holiday, flip a coin or, if you’re travelling in a group, take a vote where majority wins.

Safety Choices

When you’re out on the road and away from the places that you know, you’ll be faced with choices that will dictate your potential safety.  These decisions aren’t games.  Making the wrong choice when it comes to being safe can seriously affect the outcome of your trip.  Messing up in safety decision making can have disastrous results.
To stay safe on the road, the first conscious decision you can make is to be aware of your surroundings.  Know where you are, know a little bit about the country or city you’re visiting and adjust your decisions accordingly.  Be street smart, no matter what street in what country on what continent you find yourself on.

If you’re going to spend any time doing something adventurous, like caving, mountain biking or hiking, ensure that you have the right equipment and that you’re working with a dependable tour company with an impeccable safety history.  That way, you’ll know you’re in good hands and trying something new with the right equipment.

When it doubt, make the safest choice.  You won’t regret it.

If you’re unsure about making the proper safety choices while on vacation, it’s best to get a little more knowledge.  Spend an afternoon in a local bookstore with an assortment of travel guides.  Pay special attention to the sections on potential annoyances, dangers and travel warnings.
