![]() Bunions and hammertoes can also be caused by prolonged wearing of high heels. Tight-fitting shoes can cause the bony growth, known as a bunion, on the joint at the base of the big toe, which forces the big toe to angle in towards the other toes. Hammertoes result from a narrow toebox that forces your toes to be squished together. Ultimately, the muscles in the second, third and fourth toes become unable to straighten, even when they are not confined in a narrow show anymore. Last but not least, the rigid backs or straps of high heels can cause a bony enlargement known as Haglund’s deformity, which can make it painful to just wear the shoe without even walking in it. Happy Feet You need to take precautions if you want to rock those heels on a regular basis. Even though this all sounds drastic and somewhat scary, it shouldn’t put you off from wearing nice stilettos or platform high heels. Just make sure you are prepared for it. There are so many products out there including cushioned insoles, pads for the ball of the foot, heel protectors, arch protectors and so many more that it doesn’t have to be a daunting experience to walk in heels. Just don’t wear them when you’re out shopping or when you know you’re going to be walking for an extended period of time. If you have to walk, take breaks once every hour, just to take the pressure off your toes and let them relax for a little. Also, try to alternate days for wearing heels. You don’t have to be in 6-inch heels every day. Try shorter heels for other days or you can even try wedge heels, as they can be easier to balance in.
