Colder weather calls for more practical fashion accessories.  Marta Maslej outlines the basics on how to stay cute and warm throughout these long winter months.
Let’s face it.  By this time of the year, winter quickly loses its cozy, holiday appeal.  There is little to look forward to aside from trudging through piles of snow, slush and ice and fighting the harsh wind.  In this weather, the allure of hibernation is at its greatest and while a couch and a fuzzy blanket start looking like the most appealing fashion accessories, most of us are still forced to venture outdoors to go about our daily lives.  Not to worry.  Thankfully, winter fashion is made to be both stylish and functional.  So before you decide to wear a snowsuit to school or work, consider these winter accessories that will help you face the chilly weather and look great at the same time.

Hats

Because most of the body’s heat escapes through the head, warm hats remain an underrated winter accessory.  Boater hats or fedoras may be a hip trend, but unfortunately they provide little protection in freezing temperatures.  Luckily, there are many varieties when choosing a stylish and practical winter hat.  You may wish to go with a beanie or beret.  Oversized or loosely fitted beanies in thin or chunkier knits are proving to be one of this year’s best winter accessories.  When picking a shade, either match accordingly with an outfit or offset the colour of your hair.  Light or pastel berets are cute and girly while darker and heavier knits contribute towards a hipper, artsy look.  For a sporty option, bomber hats are a very warm alternative.  With a variety of styles and designs, you can choose a plaid hat or opt for something more muted, such as a uniform shade of navy or gray.

Mittens And Gloves

Don’t be fooled.  These have come a long way since the colourful mitts that mom pinned to your jacket in grade school.  While styles have evolved since childhood, mitts and gloves are still just as important in cold weather.  They come in a variety of shades and fabrics depending on occasion and taste.  Leather gloves can be a great addition on your way to a night out.  Those daring enough to engage in winter sports or activities, however, may opt for more functional pieces, such as knitted or fleece mitts in order to keep warm.  Mittens and gloves that extend beyond the wrist to the elbow are great if you can find them.  They can be easily folded down or worn over sweaters for additional warmth.  Another interesting alternative is the fingerless glove or mitt.  Not only stylish, this practical trend allows for an easier grip when counting change, adjusting settings on an mp3 player or sending a quick text, without having to be removed.
