Where are the best places to see Australian wildlife? Sarah Stefanson has some personally tested suggestions for your trip to the Melbourne area. ![]() Yarra Valley Wineries The Yarra Valley starts 45 kilometres east from Melbourne’s Central Business District and boasts beautiful scenery and excellent wineries. The winery I visited while I was there is Fergusson Winery where I was treated to lunch (with wine, of course) and soothing live classical guitar under a chandelier made of green wine bottles. Melbourne Zoo It has all the standard features of any major city’s zoo, but the feature I found particularly appealing at the Melbourne Zoo was the Butterfly House, a hot, humid enclosure full of tropical plants and hundreds of indigenous butterfly species. The butterflies fly freely about the House, sometimes even landing on visitors. There’s a strict no-touch policy, of course, since their delicate bodies can’t handle the overwhelming human touch, but being in the presence of so many beautiful creatures is a real treat. |
