What does silence have to do with a healthy relationship? Lisa Xing shares some indicators that your relationship is on the right track. ![]() Spending Time Apart In the beginning of a relationship, it can be tough to spend time apart. This is completely normal and you should embrace this period, as it is probably one of the best stages of a relationship. Once the relationship progresses, a healthy relationship is usually one in which both people can take time and be apart for a while and still be happy. This doesn’t mean a breakup or a break or anything along those lines. It refers to being able to go on a vacation with friends, for example, and not be constantly wishing you were with your significant other or incessantly texting or calling him or her. It’s important to be able to maintain a certain level of autonomy and, if not, the relationship may become a bit too co-dependent. Time Spent Together Conversely, the quality of the time spent together is also something that may be indicative of a successful and healthy relationship. When some couples spend time together, they are literally together. They can’t focus on their own tasks. For example, can you read a magazine while he’s working on a report without constantly distracting each other? This is another important aspect of being together—being able to be apart while being together. While this may not seem like an important issue, it really is, because it shows that you can be your own person and be independent while still with someone else. |
