A Guide To Smelling Stylish

Why is a fragrance your most personal style accessory?  Lauren Festa tells you how to go about finding the right scent for you.

When it comes to choosing a fragrance, you should try to choose one that you won’t get tired of quickly.  Some luxury brands have “signature scents,” which translate into a sort of fashion uniform.  It may take a little while to find a scent that can be your uniform or signature.  If you’ve already found yours, perhaps it’s time for a change.

We do not only present ourselves to others visually. Rather, because we live in a full sensory world, smells make up for a huge chunk of how we are perceived by others.  The scent we give off can make a powerful impression on others and can imprint a memory of us in other people's minds.  It can channel sexiness, sweetness, boldness or cleanliness and, just like clothing, though there are trends in the fragrance department, the smell of the season may not necessarily work for you.  You wouldn’t wear a shoe that didn't fit your foot, would you?  Choosing a fragrance is a lot like wearing the right shoe; it has to fit you.

Choosing Your Scent

Department stores can be an overwhelming environment.  Shelves upon shelves of pretty perfume bottles with different aromas swirling together can leave you dizzy.  Before you enter the scent jungle, start by thinking of your favourite foods.  If you love fruit like oranges, you're probably a citrus person.  If you love Indian food, you may love spicier notes like cardamom.  This is probably the easiest association to start with.  With more smelling practice, you can differentiate what kind of smells you like among the selection.

It’s An Emotional Thing

Fragrances and why we like them are really based on emotions.  We may not be able to explain why we like the scent of something, we just know we do.  Buying a fragrance is a personal decision, so let your emotions drive your choice.  The right fragrance will likely translate into lifting your mood.  If you seek the advice of a perfume consultant, they may ask you about things that seem unrelated to the fragrance itself (i.e. what kind of car you drive, what type of dog you own, your favorite colour).  The reason behind these queries is that a fragrance reflects your lifestyle and will represent your experiences and feelings.  Your life evolves and changes constantly and the new fragrance you buy should express that change.
