Why I Am Still Single: Part 1

Tired of having to defend your single status?  Robyn Simpson commiserates with you.
One thing I love about family functions is the inevitable question, “Do you have a boyfriend?”  Following my answer of, “No,” I get the question, “Why not?”  Normally I mumble out something about not knowing, but I can’t help but wonder:  are we single by circumstance or by choice?

Circumstance

My initial reaction to the question of why I’m not seeing anyone is something along the lines of “Ummm, hell-OOOO!  I need a guy willing to date me!”  This is true enough.  Unfortunately, there are no stores where one can go and simply buy a boyfriend.  We all know that finding a mate is a long and arduous process.  First, you must wait for the ultimate coincidence:  being in the right place at the right time and sparking a conversation.  This can take forever, yet can happen when you least expect it.

Followed by said coincidence, you have to get over the initial first meeting awkwardness.  If you have found some common interests and enjoy one another’s company, then you see if there is physical attraction and chemistry.  If you have the elusive spark, then you can proceed to flirting and eventually dating.

That’s a lot of balls to juggle.  No wonder some of us are single!

Choice

However, there are a few people who would argue that if we are single it’s the result of a choice we have made.  In some instances, this is obvious.  Perhaps you are newly single and are just not ready to give your all to a relationship.  Or maybe you are in a transitory place in life and can’t commit to anything for more than a few months.  Or you could have just decided that men aren’t worth the trouble and you are happily single.

Then there are those who have subconsciously created lives that don’t leave room for finding a fulfilling relationship.  If you’re married to your job, I highly doubt you’ll find anyone in your office in the wee hours of the night.  If you’re married to your cats, you won’t find Mr. Right cleaning out their litter box.
