With the holidays approaching, you may be wondering what to get for your significant other or if you should get anything at all.  The latter issue is usually a problem for those in new relationships, while the former issue applies to couples that buy gifts, but are at a loss for what to get this year.  While this problem usually applies to guys, plenty of girls get confused when it comes to gifts, especially if they aren’t sure where they stand with him.  Fortunately, there are ways to figure it out that will suit every personality type.

Come Right Out And Ask

If you’re a blunt and straightforward kind of person you probably won’t ever have to deal with this issue.  When you have a question, you ask it.  You aren’t worried about the consequences of being bold because you would rather know the answer than sit and struggle with all of the possibilities.

Individuals who aren’t normally so forthcoming should try to find out how he or she feels about them.  To avoid forcing the “what point are we at?” discussion that most men (and some women) dread, just be honest and say that you really like him, are happy with the way things are and want to know any expectations for the holidays.  Then you can decide on a price limit together.  With many men, honesty is always the best policy.  If they want to know something about you, they will likely just ask you, whereas women try to think of all the responses he could give and weigh the pros and cons for each.  Sometimes it really is as simple as asking.

How Much Should You Spend?

For couples that are confident in their statuses, the question may be how much to spend.  This is easier to figure out than the last scenario because these couples should be relatively comfortable with each other and can decide on a price range together.  Above all else this should be based on what you can afford.  One of the biggest problems established couples can come across during the holidays is spending more than they should.

During tough economic times, make it easier on your partner and set a spending limit.  To add a little romance to the frugality of the subject, tell him or her that the gift has to be thoughtful and from the heart.  This way, you are both forced to think about what you will give the other instead of going out and buying something random.

Making the holidays about each other and not about a dollar amount is a great way to reintroduce romance into your relationship.  If you are lucky enough to have never lost romance to begin with, then at the very least you will have one more reason to feel lucky to have someone special in your life.
