How To Choose A Holiday Gift For Your Partner

The Practical Gift-Giver

Some couples prefer to buy their spouse something that they know is needed.  In this case, you can do one of two things.  Make note of any items he or she needs throughout the year and use that inventory for birthday and holiday gift ideas.  Or, if you don’t mind ruining the element of surprise, just ask what he or she wants.

Depending on both of your personalities, it may make more sense to give a gift the other one needs and will use often.  For other couples, keeping it a surprise shows both your romantic and thoughtful side.

Either way, every couple is different so you should go with what works for the two of you.  I often get “suggestions” from family and friends on certain aspects of my relationship and while I consider all of them, I inevitably go with some variation that suits the two of us.  I have learned that this approach is the key to a long-lasting relationship.  And I’m not just talking about gift-giving.  Anyone can give you suggestions on what has worked for their relationships, but you have to modify them to suit your own or the information is useless.

Go With Your Gut

Sometimes you come up with a great gift idea and although it may not fit the monetary limitations you set, you can still go for it.  I have learned that this is the way some guys think and it allows for some spontaneity.

Gift giving often calls for practicality, but sometimes it calls for creativity and attention to the little things.  No matter what your style, always allow for some wiggle room.
