What extra significance does January 1st have in Cuba?  Jenny Ferguson shares some international New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The New Year is fast approaching, holidays from work and school are just around the corner and that means it’s high time to start thinking about your New Year’s getaway.  With New Year’s Eve celebrations, it’s always best to book early, but you can still find some last minute deals if you’re only now starting to consider your first escape of the New Year.  Whether you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate the New Year in style, to enjoy yourself with a whole lot of rest and relaxation or to take your family on a trip to remember, this list will give you plenty of options for your first vacation destination of the New Year.  There’s only one question left:  where will you be when you ring in 2010?

Fly Around The World

Hop on a plane and travel around the world to be in one of the first places in the world to celebrate the coming of 2010:  Australia!  Whether you want to spend your evening in Sydney, in Canberra, the capital of the country or in any one of a half dozen Australian cities, you’ll be sure to enjoy yourself.  You don’t have to spend New Year’s Eve out in the cold like you would at home.  It’s summer in Australia, so take advantage of the temperate weather to dress to the nines and leave your parka at home!  Expect fireworks and, in Sydney, “crowds of more than 1.5 million people” according to Australia’s New Year’s Eve portal, www.newyearseve.com.au.  If you’re interested in flying to the land down under for a celebration to remember, this is the website to check out for more details.

New York, New York

New York City is a classic location when it comes to New Year’s getaways.  The first celebration at Times Square was in 1904.  New Year’s Eve in Times Square is infamous and according to the Times Square Alliance, spending the last night of the year in Time Square “has become more than just a celebration - it's a global tradition.”  While the weather will certainly be chilly, you’ll be surrounded by crowds of New Yorkers and visitors from around the world as you watch the ball drop on 2009.  There will be musical performances from top stars, fireworks and lots of revelry.  To top it off, the event is free.  What more could you ask for?  Check out http://timessquarenyc.org/nye/nye.html for more details.
