Which products are you wasting money on by using too much? Sam Stilson suggests moderation in grooming. ![]() While this is all very well and good, things can turn ugly when people put too much faith in their products. If you’ve ever met a guy who won’t go to the corner store without applying hair wax, you know the type. Things get really out of hand when people start overusing products in some sort of ‘more is better’ way of thinking, but when it comes to fashion and grooming, less is always more. If you find yourself going through a six-month supply of gel in six days, perhaps it’s time you re-evaluate your portion sizes. The following four products are chronically overused and if you can dial back your application habits, you’ll not only save money and time, but maybe a little dignity too. Hair Gel The most obvious culprit, of course, is hair gel. The symptoms vary, but the cause is always the same. Whether your hair is spikier than stalagmites or your locks are greasier than chicken wing fingers, chances are, you are loading on the gel or mousse by the handful each morning. When applying hair product you should always try to use the bare minimum. A quarter-sized amount is more than enough. Think of gel as something that accentuates your hairstyle not as the foundation for your entire hairdo. Not only will you look better, but your hair will also be healthier, cleaner and softer. For those who slick their hair up to the point of greasiness, the solution is simple: stop it. Greasy hair is an outdated style that has yet to make a true comeback. If you simply must, dilute how much product you use by keeping your hair wet with water. Body Wash Now that bars of soap seem to be dreadfully unfashionable, most men find themselves lathering up with body wash and subsequently many guys are just flat out using too much of it. It’s hard to blame them, however, as it comes in a squirt bottle, a dispensing mechanism that always promotes over-usage (see ketchup on french fries) and many body washes don’t create a particularly intense lather. Therefore, more body wash is doled out to cover one’s whole body. This ends up wasting product and can leave your skin with a soapy film on it post-shower. The solution is to try out a variety of body washes until you find one that lathers up quite a bit, then use just enough of it. Using a shower poof or cloth to apply body wash can also ensure you don’t waste soap. |
