Want something to add a little zing to your summer look? Reine Gammo explores the history of nail polish and shares the new must-have colour. ![]() Past: The Emergence Of Nail Polish The first ever nail polish that was created was in the 1920s, when it was popularized by the French, but did not quite catch on in North America. The first nail colour was invented by Max Factor and was a cream that would produce a natural, light pink hue when applied to the nail. Later came the Hollywood-inspired style that would cover the entire nail except for the moons of the nail, which was made famous by Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and Joan Crawford. This particular look is experiencing a bit of a comeback, appearing at recent shows for Dior and Thakoon. Hollywood stars also influenced the types of colours to be invented and sold in stores. Rita Hayworth, for example, was hugely emulated for her oval, red nails. This was also often done in the previously mentioned moon-style for some time. A trend started by Revlon had women matching their nail polish to their lipsticks. However, like the trend of matching the belt with the shoes, this trend quickly died when the Mod movement revolutionized the trend by matching nail colour to clothes. This is now the dominant trend, although, some daring fashionistas don’t match their nail colour to anything in particular. In fact, they might choose a colour particularly for its clashing effect. This works right now as the “mix and match” movement is still going strong in fashion. Pastel nail colours followed shortly after, and later, there were the neon bright colours that are a constant summer staple every year. From yellow to hot pink to blue and even green, this summer is exploding with colour. Perhaps it’s a cheer-up mechanism after a harsh winter and a globe-wide depression due to politics and the economy. One thing is certain: colours are always cheerful and put you in a good mood. Going bare for summer (at least for nails) is boring! Of course, who can forget the black nail polish trend that has been going strong for almost a decade? It started with rockers like Lou Reed and was adopted by Marilyn Manson and then by models like Kate Moss. I must admit, it is not a very summer-appropriate colour, but it does have its appeal. It has also inspired this summer’s new must-have colour. Present: Must-Have Nails The new trendy colours for nails this summer are shades of grey. This trend will no doubt carry on to the fall season. You can wear it in matte, bright or sparkly, but whichever one you choose, you will definitely be making a statement, especially if you add this great colour trend to your night time summer parties. Another great colour that is soon to hit the market is a re-imagined take on the ever famous vamp colour; the deep reddish brown nail colour made famous by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. It is going to be infused with gold and plum flecks to revamp vamp. |
