5 Summer Clothing Staples

Which summer item can you afford to go a little crazy with?  Sam Stilson outlines the summer basics all men should have.
While every man’s wardrobe is filled with different items that cater to his specific fashion tastes, there are always a few staples that tend to show up in everyone’s drawers no matter who you are.  This is especially true when it comes to seasonal clothing.  Most guys tend to have the same summer items stowed away until the first truly hot day hits and then they are reintroduced into the cycle.  Whether these items are admired because of their functional nature or they just carry a universal appeal, most men should be breaking them out by now and if you don’t have them, you’d better hit the mall.

Cargo Shorts

You’re not necessarily going to be wearing these shorts to dinner, but for days at the cottage or even just kicking around the house on the weekend, cargo shorts are absolutely perfect summer wear.  Their appeal lies largely in their copious number of pockets.  If you’re hitting a summer festival and need a place to stash…whatever, they’re perfect.  If you’re on a hiking or fishing trip and need some extra storage space, you couldn’t ask for more.  They are durable and thick ensuring years of use, while at the same time they aren’t too hot to wear on the muggiest of nights.  Colour and design are up to you, but don’t go for the cheapest brand when buying cargos.  They should last a lifetime, but only if you pony up the cash.  Avoid Velcro clasps or unnecessary bells and whistles and stick with metal buttons and discreet zippers for the pockets.

Loafers

Every grown man should own a pair of leather loafers.  They are simple, comfortable and can be slipped on and off with ease.  They are really the perfect summer shoes.  Another great aspect of loafers is that they can work in both casual and semi-formal settings.  They are lightweight and allow your feet to breathe, especially if you wear them barefoot (as you should).  A classy pair of loafers can look great with either pants or shorts, but aren’t so dainty that you need to worry about every little scuff that marks them.  The only knock against loafers is that they lack arch support, so if you plan on jogging during the day, save your soles and leave the loafers at home.  When picking out a pair, style, design and colour is really up to the wearer, so go nuts.
