![]() Running strengthens your heart and your leg muscles. I am someone who has never been able to build muscle easily, but I have developed great definition in my lower body by running. And no, running will not make your legs look bulky. If you don’t believe me, check out pictures of professional athletes who run long distances. It’s Good For Your Bones Contrary to popular belief, running is good for your joints and your bones. This is particularly important if you are a woman since running can help prevent osteoporosis. Just like your muscles get stronger when you lift weights, the impact running puts on your bones makes them stronger too. It Reduces Stress Running in itself can be a peaceful and meditative experience. Running for me is about escaping the rest of my life for 30 to 40 minutes in a day. Not to mention that I get a great feeling when I finish my run. The exertion of running helps me feel spent, but in a good way. No matter my frame of mind when I start running, by the end of my run, I feel much better. It Gives You Goals Running is a great way to build small goals into your daily life. Make them manageable and reasonable. Don’t expect to be able to run 30 minutes straight the first time you go out. Heck, don’t expect to be able to run five minutes straight without feeling exhausted. Take your time. It will come. A great goal to set is to decide to run in a race or a charitable event. Start with a five kilometre run and see where that takes you. Not only do you have something to work towards, but you can also support your favourite cause at the same time. In terms of the goals I set for myself, I eventually got to a point where I decided to run a marathon. I was no overnight success, mind you. It took me four months to train for the marathon and I took a long time to finish it when I actually did it. Even though I am an avid runner to this day, I probably wouldn’t do one again. They are very tough on the body. But the fact that I did it taught me to be persistent about what I want, which is how we earn most things in life that we want.
