Stylish Winter Coats Without All the Substance

Winter Leather Jacket

Another great choice for a winter jacket is to go the leather route.  Leather is incredibly good at retaining heat and with a subtle inner lining (bonus if it’s removable) you will hardly feel the wind against your chest.  A dark brown leather jacket in either a longer overcoat cut or a belt length bomber (that does not taper) looks incredibly sharp.  Leather lasts forever if it’s taken care of, so with that in mind, go for a timeless look and nothing too trendy or modern in design.  Stay away from unnecessary buckles, zippers and such in a leather jacket.  As opposed to some other jackets, leather looks better when kept simple.  Another bonus that comes with leather is that it caters to your style of dress beneath.  If you are in a simple sweater or old dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, you will look like a casual easygoing guy who happens to have a nice coat.  If you’re dressed up and your jacket is still in great shape, you can look formal, but with an edge.

Casual Coat

If leather and pea coats aren’t your thing (i.e. you don’t have to dress up to go to work and you want to play in the snow a little), you can still look good as well.  There are plenty of great cotton, filled jackets and parkas available.  It’s important here to stay away from too much tapering, especially around the waist.  Again, thin, form-fitting jackets look best, but the length is up to you.  Jackets with a hood are always a great decision because with the heat-retention you give up by choosing cotton, any extra wind protection is a bonus.  The military chic style is still popular and so army greens and blacks as well as simple white and grey jackets complete with all the military-inspired detailing will look very fashionable.  The only thing to remember with wearing a light, thin cotton/polyester jacket is that you will need to wear lots of accessories to stay warm.  Toques, scarves and layered shirts are all must-haves if you’re don’t want to freeze.

cool, but not cold

Winter coats need to be functional, especially if you live in an area that sees a lot of snow.  Luckily, coats are some of the most fashionable items available to our sex and a simple look back at well-dressed men in the last half a century will reveal a myriad of great coat choices.  Just remember to keep it simple, thin and slim, and you can’t go too wrong.  So come this December, even though you may have to shiver a little, at least you’ll look great doing it.
