Why is keeping in touch with your friends important? Lisa Xing gives you pointers on how to keep the friendship going strong. Keeping up with friends can be a tough thing to do, especially after you all go in your separate directions and get on with your own lives. It may be tough, but keeping in touch with old friends can be one of the most rewarding things in life. There’s nothing better than staying friends with someone you’ve known since you were still in the single digits. So, don’t give up and put a little effort into it. You’ll be surprised how rewarding and warm it will make you feel. Communication Communication is the key in any kind of relationship and this is no different. Even though you may find that both of you are busy in your respective lives, keeping the lines of communication open is a priority and there are several ways of going about it that could work for your packed schedules. If you’re far away, meeting up for coffee dates on a regular or semi-regular basis is out of the question, but modern technology always has its perks. Phone calls are the next best way to keep in touch. Hearing his or her voice over the phone is personal and interactive. However, it may not always be feasible in our day-to-day lives, especially if we have careers, a significant other or even a family. If this is so, try to fit in a phone call every few weeks or every few months to update each other on what is going on in your respective lives. The next best thing to a phone call is probably email. This is a quick and easy way to keep in touch. It’s also easier to stay in touch more regularly, so you don’t have to bang out a novel every time you email. Random, spontaneous texts are also great little surprises to give and get. Drop your friend a line, wishing them a Happy Thanksgiving if you can’t make it home. They will definitely appreciate it! Gifts If this person is a good friend, then it’s probably a good idea to do a little something for them on holidays and their birthday. It doesn’t have to be much, but sending them a letter or a card in the mail can mean a lot to them. If you have the time, maybe even pick up something for them and drop it in the mail. Small gestures can mean a lot. |
