What Your Hairstyle Says About You

Which hairstyle says a woman is confident and independent?  Jessica Bianchi reveals how your next trip to the hair salon might shape someone’s perception of you. After answering just five questions, Ladies’ Home Journal told me that I have a sophisticated hairstyle personality.  I have a “taste for the finer things in life” and I take time to make my hair perfect every day.  I almost blew coffee through my nose.  Looking in the mirror, I’m sporting my usual ponytail with my bangs clipped back.  Just perfect.  I’m not even sure how to work a round brush or whether or not hairspray is appropriate.  Ladies’ Home Journal definitely got this one wrong, but it does make me wonder, how does a person’s choice at the hair salon reflect their choices in life?  I figured, to answer this one, a strictly for observation trip to the hair salon was necessary.

The Receptionist

Walking into my hair salon, I can almost always be certain that the same lady will be behind the desk to greet me.  She may not remember my name, but she will always remember to smile and take my coat or purse.  In her early 40s, the receptionist’s hair is just past her shoulders and layered, dyed blonde, but her brunette roots are exposed.  It’s a wonder that’s possible when you’re literally a staircase away from a colourist and his colours.  What does this reveal about her?

Research suggests that women over 40 years of age who have long hair have a death grip on their youth.  Long hair is generally viewed as sexually appealing and feminine.  Not much effort is needed to pull this one off.  Her style is uncomplicated or maybe she’s just lazy.  Hence, she refuses to take the trip up the stairs to the colourist.

The 'Dresser

The hairdresser is expected to have well-kept hair.  It’s called leading by example.  My hairdresser sets an excellent example.  In her mid-20s, she has successfully pulled off a sexy bob.  “Be careful,” she once said. “Short hair is addictive.”  She has avoided the whole “blonde equals sexy” stereotype and stuck with her naturally brunette locks.

A study done at Yale University indicates that women with sexy hairstyles are perceived to be less intelligent, while women with short hair are seen as confident and outgoing.  What about a short and sexy hair cut?  I guess there is some alternative third perception.  Maybe it’s that this woman is a hairstylist who is comfortable with exposing herself to the latest trends in her profession.  Or maybe she is a confident airhead.  I’m not sure.  I’ve only really been here twice.
