Conversations With Clients

[Trainer Talk]
Ever wonder what happens on the gym floor?  Dan Grant shares some important lessons from conversations he’s had with clients.I’m busier than ever these days.  I get my butt out of bed at 4 a.m. on weekdays, get to the gym by 5:30 a.m. and I’m rocking it till about 9 p.m. on most days with clients.  I get a chance to talk to a lot of people and learn a lot about training and my clients since I’m there almost 14 hours a day.

I have great clients, and I absolutely love doing what I’m doing right now, which is changing people’s lives.  I don’t really think about all this from a body standpoint (even though that’s what probably comes across since most of what I talk about is how to change your body).  People want their body changed because that will change their current world.  I’ve had some deep conversations with clients in the past about these changes.  I’d like to share with you a few of them now.

“A Crazy, Blind Girl”

I have a client who is 95 per cent blind.  I hold her hand to take her from exercise to exercise.  When she first came to me she said, “I know you must think I’m just a crazy, blind girl for trying to do this.”

You know what that “this” is that she wants to do?  Make the national team in the 1,500 metre run. We had a long and inspiring talk about how you have to be going after something big in life or it’s just not worth it.  She’s not letting the fact that she’s visually impaired get in the way of potentially making it to the Paralympics one day.

I’m going to do everything I can to give her the best opportunity to make the national team.  She and I are going to rock it together because I want her dreams to come true and more.

If her dreams come true, then part of mine comes true too.  Because with every client I have, my dream and goal is to get them the ultimate results that maybe they didn’t even realize they could get in the first place.

This young lady is an inspiration, and if you are sitting back and letting life’s circumstances get in the way of going after your goals and dreams, whether it is to change your body or not, then you need to look at yourself in the mirror and fix your attitude…RIGHT NOW!

From Quiet to a Full-On Passion

I was training a young kid who was about 250 pounds and 12-years-old at the time.  He was shy and struggled with self-confidence.  Then came a point where confidence wasn’t an issue anymore, especially in gym class.  He wasn’t beating everybody he raced against, but he wasn’t coming dead last like he always had been.  He could leg press more than anybody in the class, which always got him fired up, and going for a bike ride with friends for the afternoon wasn’t something he couldn’t do anymore, it was something he couldn’t wait to do.

Eighty-three pounds of weight loss later, this young guy, now 14, loves exercising and fitness in general.  It was tough at the start.  He was sore and tired a lot.  It was a major adjustment to change the way he was eating.  But he just kept battling through all those barriers that were keeping him from success.

He and I always used to talk about the first time we tried just walking up and down stairs, and how after going up and down twice, he got nauseous.  Then, only two months later, he was running up these stairs with all the energy in the world.  He has a great story and he is a great kid to talk to.

A lesson I learned from him is to never stop and always keep pushing towards the finish line.  I urge you to do the same.
