How to Eat Healthy On the Go

What’s the best way to make sure you don’t skip the most important meal of the day?  Lisa Xing helps you eat right and still keep your schedule.
When we’re on the go and work dominates our lives, it’s hard to sit down and enjoy a full meal and get the proper nutrition we need to maintain these lifestyles, but it will catch up with us sooner or later.  Eating right is essential in maintaining a healthy body and mind, especially if you’re constantly working and under stress.

The Most Important Meal

Breakfast is an essential meal.  Eat it before you go to work and try to fit in as many of the food groups as you can.  Go for fruit and yogurt.  If you want, make your breakfast the night before (add cereal to your yogurt and put it in the fridge), so you can eat it quickly before you leave for work.

If you don’t have time to eat breakfast at home (although you should try to!) make sure you take it with you instead of skipping it.  Pack a bagel with peanut butter, a boiled egg, yogurt and some fruit to take with you to work.  If you never eat breakfast and know you just won’t make time in the mornings, pack a big bag of breakfast food on Sunday night and take it to work Monday morning.  It should last you for five mornings.  Do this every week.

If you absolutely must buy breakfast, go to stores and cafes on your way to work, but avoid doughnuts and sweet pastries.  The calories are through the roof and you’ll suffer from a sugar slump midday.

Even if you’re not hungry, eat something in the morning, like a fruit or a piece of toast.

Afternoon Delight

Whenever you buy lunch at the office, choose food that is baked or grilled over the fried kind if it’s at all possible.  The breading is a big culprit in fried foods, which contains high amounts of fat.  When you’re out eating a meal, always choose the side of salad with low fat dressing instead of the French fries.  It’s a much healthier choice and you’ll thank yourself later for it, especially if you want dessert.  Try not to upsize your meal.

Instead of having two or three meals a day, try to wean yourself from that habit and have many small meals throughout to keep your metabolism high.  Skipping a meal will just make you eat more during your next meal.
