Uncovering Mineral Makeup

Is It Worth It?

For all its lauded benefits, mineral makeup is not without its share of controversies.  Traditionally, mineral makeup is made with very refined natural particles and is free of fragrance, dyes and other irritants, however, some question the marketing aspect of branding something as all natural.

While many view mineral makeup as a safer alternative to standard cosmetics, as it becomes more popular, some fear that companies are jumping on the bandwagon and slapping labels on products that aren’t truly mineral-based.  If you are really concerned about avoiding artificial products, make sure to talk to a dermatologist to get a personalized recommendation.

The good news is that, in general, most mineral makeup will at least be free of dye and fragrance, making it a better option for those with sensitive skin.  Also, as these products get more popular, more companies will invest in making quality mineral brands, a trend that has definitely been on the rise!

The truth is that the scientific jury is still out on mineral makeup.  Since it is a fairly new trend, there isn’t much data surrounding its actual benefits.  There is nothing regulating who can call their product mineral-based, so while companies might be making real efforts to include mineral formulas in their cosmetics, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are better or all natural.  Also, remember that things like poison ivy are natural, but still harmful!  Just because it’s from the earth, doesn’t automatically guarantee its safety.

Having said that, companies are looking to gain clients, not repel or harm them.  My view is that this is a nascent field, so mineral cosmetics are probably a hybrid at the moment, using some old formulas while still mixing in the new techniques and ingredients.  In their current much-improved formulas, they are at least interesting to try out and could provide huge benefits to those who have struggled with traditional makeup consistency and finish.
