VolunteerGiving your time to others tends to have reverberating positive effects. Go out and do something good for someone else. Help build a house on your local Habitat for Humanity project and, in the end, you’ll both know how spending time together helped someone else. Try spending time at a local soup kitchen or volunteer at a food drive. The work might be menial, serving mashed potatoes or separating dry goods, but the results are positive for the community and for your relationship. Even if you’re busy, making time for others will remind you to make time for yourselves. Besides, doing good produces a good feeling, a product of hormones and self-satisfaction. When you recall that feeling, you’ll remember your partner being there too. Do Something Your Partner Likes If your girlfriend’s favourite thing in the world is to spend the afternoon at the baseball game eating concession food and drinking beer, take her, even if you don’t see how baseball can possibly interest anyone. If your spouse has a soft spot for shopping for the newest gear for his mountain bike and you just don’t see the thrill of picking out new tires, indulge him. The key to this bonding activity is to show the other person that they are your focus. Have fun with whatever it is they like. It shows your partner that they mean the world to you and that you’re happy to spend time with them despite your differences. This is a very powerful statement. It will surely lead to bonding. The key here isn’t to use your good turn to get something in return. This activity is about being selfless, so don’t muck it up by insisting he or she does something you like to do, even if he or she can’t stand it, because you did. Don’t insist that they do, but expect that if you’re trying to indulge them, they’ll indulge you sometime in the future. _________________________ become closer Bonding is essential to creating deep, meaningful relationships and everyone wants one of those. Have fun trying these bonding activities with your special someone. |
