Are you telling one of these fibs to make a good first impression?  Audley Stephenson talks about the things we lie about on the all important first date and why.
You’re really nervous about this blind date you’ve been set up on.  You want to make a good first impression and don’t want to waste the time and effort of the friend who arranged the whole thing.  You both agree to go for Chinese and as the date progresses, things are going pretty well:  the conversation is pleasant, the atmosphere light and the first date jitters are manageable.  Suddenly, as you bite into your spring roll, your date asks, "So, what do you do for a living?"

Your choices are simple.  You can risk looking less then spectacular by telling the truth about your mundane job.  Or you can come up with something elaborate and guarantee a second date.

Why People Lie

Lying on the first date is never a good idea and the reasons why people do it vary from one person to the next.  Regardless of the circumstances, lying can leave a negative mark that’s as tough to get rid of as a stubborn grass stain.

Here are a few reasons why some take the less than honest approach on a first date.

Lies of Reputation

It’s nerve wracking enough having to make sure that your clothes, hair and breath are all in check.  You would hate to lose a potential good thing because of an unimpressive job.  This is where lies of reputation fit in nicely.  A well-placed story about yourself can make you come out looking like a star and help achieve your objective of making a fabulous first impression.
