Basil

Basil is one of the most commonly used herbs with its versatile, sweet and pleasing taste.  Fresh basil can be incorporated into raw burger meat for an amazingly enhanced flavour.  Sweet basil leaves are also an elegant and tasty topping for anything from pasta to salad.  Rip up bits of fresh basil and shake with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and sea salt for a quick and authentic Italian dressing or marinade for grilled veggies.  Fresh basil is really easy to grow and potted varieties can be found in garden or grocery stores.

Cilantro

Cilantro is one of the easiest herbs to grow as it always seems to flourish and produce lively and fragrant citrus-flavoured leaves.  Chopped cilantro is the secret ingredient in homemade salsa or avocado dip, pairing beautifully with fresh lime juice and spices like cumin and chili powder.  In fact, cilantro is a great topping for most Mexican dishes, but it can also be used chopped up in salads or couscous to wake up vegetables and grains.  It also works well with vegetables that pair with lemon, such as zucchini.  For a simple side dish, cross hatch zucchini sticks and drizzle with a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, chopped cilantro, salt and pepper, and put directly on the grill for five minutes.
