French Language 101

Luckily, even if parodied, the French accent is one we are familiar with. Don’t be hesitant about going overboard with the accent.  Strangely, this is actually better than being too shy to roll your Rs or add that whispery air to the ends of words.  If you are planning a trip to Quebec, France, or any other country that speaks French, try renting some French movies.  Of course, you are allowed to watch them with subtitles, but just getting the feel of the language is very helpful to transition into a world where that is the norm and English is in the backseat.  

Not so Different

Another great aspect of the French language is that it shares Latin roots with English.  Whether your French is rusty or you have never spoken a word of French before, there are many similarities between the languages that ease the transition into the foreign sounds.

The best way to learn a language is to go into it with an open mind and be ready to work! It’s really gratifying to be able to have even a few key phrases under your belt, and soon you’ll know exactly what that je ne sais quoi is all about!  Bonne chance!
