![]() Whether it is in a pool, lake or ocean, parents should always actively supervise their children. It is easy to get distracted while doing numerous things and this is why more concern should be put into watching young children. Active supervision means remaining within arms reach of your child at all times. It takes only a second for a child to submerge underwater and this can be prevented through carefully watching them. A helpful suggestion may include playing games with your children while they are in the water. This ensures your eyes remain watchful and you are always nearby. With the use of active supervision you can teach small children the importance of always swimming with a friend and an adult. You also have the opportunity to set a good example that everyone can follow by not drinking alcohol during swimming activities, playing with care and being aware of your surroundings. Simon Says Following the rules posted in swimming areas and the rules of a present lifeguard is essential to keeping safe. Rules are generally in place for the best interest of the swimmers. Rules like no diving are important because water depths vary in pools and lakes. Ensure swimmers jump feet-first into the water and only dive in areas that are clearly marked where it is deep enough to do so. No running is an important rule put in place, so that no one slips on pool decks, which can become extremely slippery. _______________________ Drowning, like many other injuries and causes of deaths, is predictable and preventable. As a parent or supervisor you can help reduce the risk of water-related deaths and injuries by understanding the importance of water safety and taking basic precautions. Although swimming lessons may not be your child’s first choice in extracurricular activities, make sure they can at minimum learn the Canadian Swim To Survive Standard. Through this standard, the Lifesaving Society defines the minimum skills needed by all Canadians to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. These are explained in a skill sequence as: roll into deep water, tread water for one minute and swim fifty meters. By possessing these skills, an individual is more able to bring themselves to safety. Warm weather is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and related activities such as swimming. While participating in such activities, remember to take a moment to think about the importance of water safety! |
