The unprecedented success of HBO’s Sex and the City was due largely to the fact that nearly every woman can identify with one of the four main characters; Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha. The characters each represent a distinct facet of modern womanhood.  

The easy identification fans experience with the show prompted their official website to offer t-shirts that read “I’m a Carrie” (or Miranda or Charlotte or Samantha).

I'm a Carrie 

Carrie, the show’s main character and narrator, is a sex columnist who uses her dating experiences and those of her friends as fodder for her work. Despite rehashing the trials and tribulations of all their relationship misadventures, she still holds out for the promise of true, lasting love. 

She has an on-going, passionate yet dysfunctional love affair with the elusive Mr. Big. His irresistible charm keeps her coming back despite her more functional relationships with stable Aiden or glamorous Aleksandr. She is very trusting and has a habit of falling for the wrong guys. 

If Your Girl is a Carrie

Carrie’s fragile and somewhat neurotic nature needs constant reassurance. Expect lots of long heartfelt talks about “The Relationship” and learn to interpret her tantrums for what they really are; expressions of her contradicting desire for true love and doubt of its existence. 

Be wary of giving her everything she wants, however. Carrie needs to be challenged and gets bored easily. She is an incredibly involved girlfriend, sometimes at the expense of her friendships and work.
