Ugly Betty, which airs on ABC, is the model for what not to wear. But Krisztina Virag shows us that even Betty's horrible outfits can become ultra stylish.
Betty Suarez was hired at Mode magazine, her dream job, not because she is tall, skinny and utterly fashionable – but because she is, by the norms of society, the opposite: short, curvy and utterly UN-fashionable.
Betty Suarez is also a fictional character. In the real world, she might never have gotten the job being that she does not live up to the standards of the magazine – or perhaps fashion magazines are less shallow in our universe.
Either way, Betty – with her thick, red-rimmed glasses and adult braces – is the bottom of all jokes at Mode magazine. The audience, along with the on-screen fashionistas, can have a good giggle at those colorful outfits she wears, which seem out of place in the pastel world of Mode.
If you haven't yet caught on, I'm talking about ABC's Ugly Better. The show centres around Betty Suarez as she goes about her life with her very interesting fashion sense. But are those outfits she wears really all that bad? I care to argue, that with a few well-planned changes, Betty’s fashion sense could be completely turned around.
So without further ado, let's take a look at three outfits, plucked form the first three episodes of the hit TV series – which we can morph into hot new looks. ____________ OUTFIT #1 Checkered Dressed
This navy blue checkered dress is one of the less daring in colour combination outfits that Betty has brought onto our screens.
Most retailers in the malls cater similar dresses that look less out-dated and more flattering to a woman’s shape. Find this dress in an uniform colour, a chocolate brown or a midnight blue, with either full or ¾ sleeves to wear to the office or even on your days off.
Betty also has the idea right with her belt. By putting a belt on her waist, she is providing even more shape to the dress. You can add depth to the look by picking a thicker belt in a sun yellow for the chocolate brown or a deep red for the blue.
Whatever colour you might go with, be that the brown, blue or some other fabulous shade you discover, by adding a belt that has a punching colour, you will make your dress individual. ____________ OUTFIT #2 Bright Red Vest
Instead of starting off with what is wrong with this outfit, I will point out what is right. From bottom up, Betty did a great job with the closed toe wedges. The heel adds height, it is comfortable and it is also more stable when walking in it.
While her wedges are an almond shape, you can find fantastic wedges with round or pointy toes, according to your taste.
Black tights? Good, good, good! The checkered skirt Betty is wearing is also not too bad, the only problem with it is the shape, which is inappropriate for her body type. Checkered is in, so visit your favorite stores to find the knee length checkered skirt that best suits you.
Instead of the multi-coloured shirt, we could replace it with a black shirt and a mono-toned vest. If you purchase a skirt that is a coloured checker – wear a vest that picks up one of the colours in the skirt.
Many checkered skirts out there are gray, white and black. In that case, you could be free to choose a vest of any colour. Or you could make the vest black and the shirt a funky colour. The options are endless. ____________ OUTFIT #3
