Vitamin and mineral supplements help to fill deficiencies in your daily diet. But how do you know if you need them? Gidon Gabbay writes. ![]() Vitamins and minerals are substances your body needs in small but steady amounts for normal growth, function and health. Together, vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients. Your body can't make most micronutrients, so you must get them from the foods you eat or, in some cases, from dietary supplements. Some of you who lead active lifestyles may wonder if you actually need extra vitamins in your diet to improve your physical performance. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. First, let’s begin by figuring out what vitamins and minerals are, and why our bodies need them. What Are Vitamins And Minerals?Vitamins are organic compounds that help regulate growth, metabolism and nerve function in the body. Vitamins are not an energy source, but they play an important role in releasing the energy stored in the foods we eat. Minerals are inorganic compounds that help you form strong bones and teeth. They are the building blocks for cells and enzymes in your body. Minerals also help to control the nervous system, balance fluid in tissues, regulate muscle contractions and assist with some hormonal functions and enzyme secretion. Vitamins and minerals cannot be made in the body, so they have to be provided by the food we eat. Should You Take Supplements? If you already eat a balanced, healthy diet that includes a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and protein, you should have no problem getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. That is, of course, based on the assumption that you are eating enough to maintain a healthy body weight and fuel your body for your specific activity level.
